ERIE, Pa. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team put on quite a show at this weekend's USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship event, hosted by Mercyhurst University at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.
Coach
Sam McCullough's defending Mountain East Conference champions dominated the weekend event, making a clean sweep of the singles and doubles championships in the "A" and "B" Flights in a tournament loaded with most of the top players in the Atlantic Region.
West Liberty's
Baptiste Perrin won the "A" Flight championship singles bracket, knocking off Edinboro ace Vitor Albanese, 7-6 (4) 6-4 in a tightly-played title match.
The "A" Flight championship doubles match was an all-Hilltopper affair as
Andrew Ponder and
Santiago Gutierrez battled the pairing of Perrin and
Martin Moncayo to the wall in a three-set marathon before Ponder and Gutierrez prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker.
Pablo Cimorra had a big weekend for WLU in "B" Flight competition, winning the "B" Flight singles title and teaming with
Luke Flanagan to take the "B" Flight doubles crown.
Cimorra breezed to a straight-set win against Bluefield State's Guillermo Lopez, 6-1 6-4, in the singles final.
Cimorra and Flanagan then took the doubles title in a walkover against West Virginia Wesleyan's Andre Fernandes and Tim Stephens, but not before surviving a thrilling 9-8 tiebreaker semifinal win against Mercyhurst's Joe Paradiso and Dusan Cerny.
The USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional was the last major event of the Hilltoppers' fall schedule. The West Liberty men are scheduled to open their spring slate on Feb. 5-6 when they travel to Charleston to compete in the UC Invitational.
