WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – A stirring West Liberty comeback fell just short Tuesday night as Notre Dame (OH) upset the Lady Hilltoppers, 3-2, in a Mountain East Conference first-round tournament thriller at the ASRC.
West Liberty (12-19), which entered the match as the tournament's No. 6 seed, found itself in an early hole as the Falcons (6-26) pulled out a pair of narrow victories in the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.
Coach Kayla Fetsko's Hilltoppers refused to fold, battling back to stay alive with a 25-22 decision in the third set and gutting out a 28-26 nail-biter in a marathon fourth set.
That's where West Liberty's comeback ran out of gas, however, as Notre Dame pulled away to a 15-8 win in the final set to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round.
